Press about NACOS

( At KZOO Radio Station )

Although NACOS is a small school, our network is wide. We are continuously researching and collecting daily life situations from residents of Hawai'i and various information from Japanese visitors. We put this information to use in both our Japanese and English Programs. We are also constantly searching for appropriate people or families who are willing to share their daily lives with our students.

NACOS chooses people or families from the surrounding community who have various careers, personal interests, strong points or special skills to serve as role models for the Japanese and English language and life-style. We like to maintain good relationships with these people because they are the most important resource for our program. They contribute to the students' development in many wonderful ways, such as keeping journal entries and taking photographs of the students' activities and of their own lives. All of this is included in a personal booklet that is created for each student.

NACOS also believes in putting efforts into public service, so we started to broadcast a Radio Program and write various newspaper articles. We put these original products to use in our programs as well.

May 1991
We began an English radio program, entitled "Starting from ZERO with Michael", on KZOO (1210 AM) Monday through Friday from 10:00 PM-10:15 PM. Every month we chose one topic from a Hawaiian resident's daily life. We continued this Radio Program until the autumn of 1994.
July 1991
We first published 'Japanese is Interesting' in KZOO Radio
Magazine
. It features short dialogues, vocabulary and useful information on Japanese culture.
February 1992
We started writing 'Osamu's Clumsy Communication,' an article about the English language that appears twice a month in the Japanese Beach Press. We research and collect uncomfortable situations which Japanese visitors may experience during their stay in America.
May 1992
The Japanese language article 'Mathematics and Communication' first appeared in Island Trends Newspaper.
August 1992
We began writing 'Dr. Natsuko's Medical Communication' for the Hawai'i Pacific Press. It is co-written with Dr. Yoko Kelly who graduated from Kyushu University. Every month we write about how to describe difficult medical situations in English.
June 1993
We began writing the article entitled 'Try it Right Now' for the Ha Uy di Thoi Bao Vietnamese Newspaper. Its content was based on basic Japanese daily life.
March 1994
'NACOS English Idiom Lesson' appeared for the first time in the East West Journal. This is a short lesson on English idioms with sample dialogs that can be used in business situations.

March 2002
"Honolulu Correspondence"

In March of 2002, we started "Correspondence from Honolulu" by Fiddler Mi-chan which appears 2-3 times a month. This column features essays about different aspects of life in Honolulu, including stories about our friends. This column appears in the News from USA category of the Mainichi Newspaper International website.

January 2003

In January of 2003, we started the "Nacos English Bulletin Board" which is co-written by Drs. Norman and Yoko Kelley and appears once-a-month. Dr. Yoko Kelley gives a short lesson on English used in medical situations and examples of everyday English based on life in Nebraska.
