At NACOS, we encourage students
to concentrate on the content of the communication, rather than
on the actual language. For this reason, NACOS does not offer
typical language classes. We have collected comments from many
kinds of language students: those who have confidence in their
language ability, those who don't have any confidence at all,
those who have limited time to study a language. . . . Based
on these comments, NACOS has developed the English Daily Life
Workshop, which includes the following characteristics:
NACOS focuses on an intensive (condensed) approach
in order to enhance sensibility. By sensibility, we mean a mental
and emotional responsiveness. At NACOS, our goal is 'fruitful'
(meaningful) communication, rather than just language structure.
Students should receive impressions from a conversation which
help them to understand the meaning behind messages. Then, they
are able to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively.
To do this, a student's sensibility must be enhanced. An intensive
approach is better for this than an extended one, because the
students' impressions are fresh. With this kind of awareness,
they are able to gain meaningful experiences which they can relate
to their daily life and use to find direction in their life-long
learning.
NACOS encourages self-study and short schedules.
Many language students feel comfortable with long schedules based
upon schooling and textbooks. However, this approach is not effective.
Most people, even after years of studying in the classroom, still
can not speak the language. So, NACOS has abandoned this traditional
concept, and instead, gives its students a short schedule with
direction for self-study. In this way, they can begin to experience
the joy and enrichment of learning a foreign language through
their own efforts.
Don't study English, instead study communication!
We do not offer typical language lessons. To help students concentrate
on communication, we have developed two types of classes. The
first kind of class we offer is in describing yourself.
In this case, the student should focus on expressing themselves
through the perfect English provided in their 'Self Portrait.'
With the help of their instructor, pronunciation will be improved
and language structure will be touched upon, but it will not
be the primary focus. The second kind of class we offer is in
communicating with native speakers, in which students
communicate with and learn among people who speak the language.
The focus is understanding the messages and getting messages
across in communication, not perfect grammar.
NACOS uses these three characteristics
to help students who:
are planning to study English, but don't know how to
take the first step
have studied the language already, but are not confident
or comfortable enough when communicating with people
are studying the language, but still seek their own
personal speech style
The Daily Life Workshop is
only a stepping stone for what is to come. NACOS wants to make
learning a foreign language an enjoyable life-long task, into
which students can incorporate their personality and lifestyle.
