Information Technology is helping to
create a global arena that requires cooperation rather than competition
among people from different societies. In the 21st century, good
communication will be the key to achieving this cooperation.
What is required is understanding and respecting the customs
and cultures of others. Communication will play an important
role in the desire to help and support each other on an international
level. There are already many international conferences and organizations
working toward these goals. Communication on an individual level
is the foundation of this effort. If individuals of different
nationalities can express themselves and learn to listen to the
messages of others, they will gain a deeper understanding of
one another and may dispose of common misunderstandings and misconceptions.
In other words, they can increase their trust of each another.
NACOS would like to spread communication that encourages this outcome. To accomplish this, we ask our students not to base their language ability purely on knowledge of the mechanics of language. Instead, we teach them to enthusiastically convey messages from their hearts. We believe that this will bring great satisfaction and joy to their lives and to the world. This is Fruitful Communication. Fruitful Communication has 3 stages through which NACOS guides students.
First of all, in order to engage people, we must present ourselves favorably. Upon seeing someone, it is necessary to create a good rapport through good personal appearance (clothes, cleanliness), body language (smiles, eye-contact), consideration, and positive attitude. People generally like talking to those who have these qualities. Learning how to present oneself favorably can lead to communication with others and help to hold their attention.
Once communication has begun, the next step is building trust and developing certain expectations. Trust can be built by respecting each other's situation. This trust brings a sense of dependability into the relationship. If others feel they can depend on us, then they are more likely to open up and share things from their heart. They begin to know what to expect from us and the interactions with us. From this foundation, both communication and the relationship start to develop.
At this level of communication, even the smallest gesture can have meaning and be appreciated more intensely. Interactions in this kind of relationship are motivated by true consideration and concern for one another. Much communication between people at this stage seems, on the surface, identical to that of people in relationships at the second stage. However, the warmth and human connection run more deeply at this stage. It is "that certain something" that can be referred to as 'Fruitful Communication.' This is the most rewarding, fulfilling kind of communication in human relationships. Throughout these three stages there should be a heartfelt enthusiasm for making communication fruitful and satisfying. There are three conditions necessary to be sucessful in this: 1. The student must employ appropriate speech manners. 2. The student must have the sensitivity to read the feelings of others. 3. The student must have the desire to bring about fruitful communication. This desire acts as the glue to hold all the conditions together. During the NACOS Daily Life Workshop, students will be able to maintain their enthusiasm as they improve upon their speech manners and refine their sensitivity to reading the feelings of others. This, we believe, will lead them in advancing through the three stages of fruitful communication. |

| "If people communicate only for an exchange of information, language is just a lifeless shell. At NACOS, we motivate our students to collect satisfying communication experiences that bring the language to life." |
